HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

We are saddened by the enormous tragedy and loss of life in the impoverished country of Haiti. The earthquake’s unimaginable toll is only beginning - 7,000 people were buried in mass graves in the immediate aftermath. The news coverage has been heart wrenching; the news photos profoundly disturbing. As physicians, we understand human suffering as few others are able; we feel compelled to help in any way we can. Fortunately, we are in a position to help in easing the burden of the Haitian people. At the suggestion of MA-ACC members, we are requesting donations be sent to the American Red Cross, which is spearheading the US effort to bring relief to Haiti. We would like to make these donations in the name of individual members who donate as members of the Massachusetts Chapter of the ACC.

The Chapter will accept contributions until March 15, 2010. If you would like to make a donation, please send a check to the address below and made out to “American Red Cross”:

Massachusetts Chapter - American College of Cardiology
900 Cummings Center
Suite 221-U
Beverly, MA 01915

We will forward these checks along to the Red Cross in your name, collated by the MA-ACC, unless requested otherwise.

Your generosity in easing the suffering in Haiti at a time they need it most is greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible, and the first donations received will receive a $1,000 match by an anonymous donor.

Sincerely,

Thomas C. Piemonte, MD
Governor, MA-ACC

Please note that a Help for Haiti Fund has also been launched on the ACC National website at www.acc.org/about/support/charitable_giving.htm.

Childhood Influenza Immunization CoalitionInfluenza claims more American lives every year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. Children are particularly vulnerable to infection, and some may even die as a result of influenza. Each year, influenza causes about 20,000 hospitalizations and nearly 100 deaths in children younger than 5 years of age, yet vaccination rates remain low.  Many individuals – parents and health care professionals alike – don’t realize that it is beneficial to vaccinate against influenza well into the New Year.  Influenza outbreaks typically peak in February and continue until around May.  It is clear that vaccine given this January and beyond is of great benefit.

For more information, click on the following link at

  • Videos tailored to families/caregivers and health care providers, featuring expert Coalition members answering frequently asked questions on influenza and vaccination

  • Informational materials, like posters and brochures, geared toward families/caregivers and health care providers

  • A Spanish web site (www.prevengalagripeinfantil.org) hosting various educational materials

  • Multilingual materials available in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tagalog and Vietnamese

Act now to protect children throughout the influenza season.
